wine bottlesPG Wine Tips for this week includes a £3.99 Italian red, a Rioja on offer at Sainsbury's and a Carmenere that tastes like cake - very good cake.

£3.99 and under

There are still some good bottles to be found that cost the same as a couple of National Lottery tickets.

Aldi RossoItalian Toscana Rosso

£3.99 Aldi

Light cherry flavours deepened with a touch of liquorice and chocolate. A nice bit of oomph for £3.99.

£5.99 and under

There are a few fruity, slurpable wines among the forgettable masses.

Marques de Montino Spanish Rioja 2011

£4.65 Sainsbury’s (down from £6.99 until February 19)

The sour cherry, chocolate and bilberry flavours really need matching with food to be enjoyed at their best otherwise all you’ll register is a mouth-drying spiciness. But if you’ve got a plate full of pizza, pasta or steak and chips then it’ll be a bargain.

Asda Extra Special South African Pinotage 2011

£5 Asda (down from £6.98 until February 20)

You’ll need to decant this wine into a jug at least an hour before you want to drink it to lose the burnt toast edge. After that the juicy blackberry and blackcurrant flavours shine through. Definitely worth a punt.

Spar Australian Chardonnay Semillon

£5.29 Spar

Creamy apple, toast and lime flavours.

Casillero del DiabloCasillero de Diablo Chilean Carmenere 2011 Reserva

£5.99 Co-op (down from £7.99 until February 5)

Tastes like a Black Forest gateaux crossed with coffee and walnut cake. Nice.

Belletti Sparkling Italian Prosecco Extra Dry

£5.99 Aldi

A perfectly pleasant fizz with simple apple and pear flavours. Good with cake.
