turkeyLet’s raise a glass to seasonal frugality. Because the Christmas drink shopping needn’t be all about spending huge amounts – it is still possible to get yourself, and the hoards of visiting relatives, something decent to slurp with the turkey for under £3.50.

But there is a slight drawback; you’ll no longer have the run of all the supermarket wine aisles. But if you don’t mind your wine choice being a bit limited, but still tasty, here are my top six bargain seasonal sippers.

All six are available right now from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi or Morrisons, and all are guaranteed to work out at under £3.50 a bottle.

Aldi St. Amandus Liebfraumilch 2009, 10% alcohol
£2.78 Aldi

Best Low Alcohol Wine of 2010. There aren’t too many low alcohol wines about despite consumers crying out for them. Of those available most are German and white, and this wine is no exception. But don’t be put off by the Liebfrau label, its quaffable pear and peach flavours are tamed with lime and warming ginger.

Hock Deutscher Tafelwein, 9% alcohol, 1.5-litre tetrapak
£5.99 (equivalent to £2.99 for 75cl) Morrisons

Another German low alcohol wine that’s fruity and surprisingly unsweet. Peach, melon, apple and pear flavours.

Douglas Green wineAldi Hugarian Budavár Merlot
£2.99 Aldi

More Aldi bargains. This one’s a red fruit bonanza: blackberry, sweet strawberry and raspberry topped with liquorice.

Vieille Fontaine French Vins de Pays du Comté Tolosan
£3.29 Tesco

This soft red is an ideal match to lighter meats such as turkey. Gentle raspberry and strawberry flavours.

Aldi Italian Montepulciano D’Abruzzo
£3.39 Aldi

Aromas of creamy blackcurrant and cherry, followed by flavours of blackcurrant cheesecake with extra coffee and black pepper.

Sainsbury’s House Dry White, 11.5% alcohol
£3.49 Sainsbury’s

A non-descript bottle hides a complex wine. Initially tasting of grapefruit when first opened this wine mellows to melon, pear, apple and mandarin. A great match to main meals with rich sauces.
