Top Ten Whites of 2013

trophyTop Ten White Wines of 2013 this week. There will also be a Paula’s Top Ten Red Wine choices of 2013 and the Top Sparkling Wines of 2013 as well as the Top Ten Must Haves for Christmas Day. But no Top Ten Rosés or After Dinner wines.

Because this year has seen a dearth of great tasting and great value wines that are a delightful pink colour and an even greater lack of wines to match the cheese and nuts course. But slurpable whites at a reasonable price there have been, in abundance - which made it very hard to knock the list back to just the top ten. But here they are ranging in price from £6.99 to £10.99 listed in order of which bottle to save first if the house floods.

Paula’s Top Ten White Wines of 2013

Tastes like a melon cheese cake. Very slurpable and very nice.

Atalaya Godello3

An unusual and fruity tasty wine with flavours of melon, honey and fennel that takes on hoppy lager notes after about ten minutes. Balanced.

4

Modesta Spanish Viura 2012

£7 Spar

Top stuff from the corner shop brand of Spar. Tastes like good champagne without the bubbles.

5

M&S Bordeaux Sauvignon 2011

Fresh gooseberry with an oregano twist. Refreshing, gluggable and really nice.

6

The Devil’s Rock Limited Edition South African Chenin Blanc 2011 (no longer available)

£9.99 Waitrose

Honey, almond, lemon and lime with a sharp apple ending. Complex.

8

Light melon, apple and pineapple mix with a touch of walnut and coffee astringency in the aftertaste.

9

The Exquisite Collection Limoux Chardonnay
