diaryNew Year, new wine offers. There are some about but don't expect any stupendous bargains in the supermarket wine aisles of Great Britain this January: leftover Christmas champagne and cava is now at half price, and brand names you've never heard of are down £1.50 a bottle. But among these lame offerings are a few real bargains – you've just got to know what you're looking for.

The Co-op has reduced its reliable own-brand Italian Pinot Grigio to £3.99 until January 19th. Down by £1.20 may not sound a great deal until you realise the wine was a pretty good bargain at its full price of £5.19: lemon, honey and hazelnut flavours match almost any meal and it even makes a pretty good supping all night in front of the tele wine.

While you're at the Co-op you may as well get in a bottle or two of Chalisse Reserve Côtes du Rhône Villages, down from £9.99 to £5.99 also until January 19th. Paying less than £8 for an up-market French regional wine is quite a find and this one certainly is – spicy blackberry flavours mixed with chewy liquorice make an ideal match to the last of the Christmas chocolates.

At first glance Morrisons' wine shoppers have little reason to be cheerful but look beyond the 'save £1.00' stickers and you'll find Chilano Merlot Shiraz and Chilano Sauvignon Blanc are down to £4.49 until January 23rd. Enjoyably fruity, both these Chilean wines have been reduced into the everyday price range.

Villa MariaTesco is the place to be if you're a New Zealand white wine fan. Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc and East Coast Chardonnay are now £6.49, while the Pinot Grigio is £5.99. Distinctive flavours at a great price until February 1st.
