brussel sproutsTop Ten Must Have Wines For Christmas Day this week. Because, if you’re like me, then you’ve been concentrating on the nosh side of Christmas rather than what wine to match with the roast turkey, the cold turkey, the turkey curry, the mince pies, the puddings, the nuts...yes well. So here are ten wines ranging from £4.49 for a stonking value Greek red to a posh sherry tasting pack at £30.25. And what these wines have in common is that they’re all well worth the money.

Paula’s Top Ten Must Have Wines For Christmas Day

In ascending order of price:

Mavrodaphne of Patras, Sweet Red Greek wine

£4.49 Tesco

Since revealing this stonking value wine in my Top Ten Wines Under Six Quid it’s sold out at Morrisons but has been relisted at Tesco and Tesco Wine by the Case. Which is great news as without seeing the label you’d think this luscious wine was a vintage port selling at three times the price. Flavours of raisin, marzipan, plum and blackberries is cut through with the fresh acidity of apple – which stops the whole lot becoming too sweet. Amazing value.

Co-op Truly Irresistible Spanish Godello 2012 (white)

£6.99 Co-op (down from £8.49 until 31 December)
The first of five listings from the Co-op – so if you can’t get down to any other supermarket this Christmas then that’s the place to head for. And look out for their new Truly Irresistible wine range because they are ace. Yes really, you can’t go wrong with these fresh and fruity wines. Plus many of the range are down in price at the moment, so even better. The complex Godella has enough interest and zing to make it equal to any fino sherry as an aperitif but there’s also enough flavour going on to make it a match to light foods: expect long flavours of creamy apple and fresh pineapple.

Co-op Truly Irresistible Viognier3

Co-op Truly Irresistible French Viognier 2012

£6.99 Co-op (down from £8.99 until 31 December)

Initial sweet flavours of almond and pear are soon followed by a crispness which stops this wine becoming overpowering. Match to turkey followed by apple pie.

Fond de Cave Argentinean Tempranillo 2011

£6.99 Co-op (down from £8.99 until 31 December)

Sweet chocolate initially with blackcurrant coulis, with a touch of sloe dryness at the end. A good match to lightly curried foods or red meats covered in gravy.

Truly Irresistible Italian Gavi 2012

£7.99 Co-op (down from £9.99 until 31 December)

A very refreshing and quaffable wine with slight lemon flavours mixed with pear and apple dryness. A wine that almost anyone can enjoy.

Moncucco Moscato D’Asti 2011, 50cl, 5.5% alcohol

£9.49 Invinity Wines, £9.99 T Wright Wines, £12.85

A slightly fizzy, marmalade-tasting low alcohol wine in an extremely smart looking bottle. Consume as an aperitif or after dinner wine.

Truly Irresistible French Chinon 2011 (red)

£9.99 Co-op

If you like raspberries then you’re going to love this wine, because that’s what it smells and tastes of! Along with a bit of cherry and violet cream. A light red to match to the turkey or pork roast.

La Toledana Vendemmia Gavi 2012

£10.99 Majestic

Tastes like a Bakewell tart but with peach preserve instead of jam.

South Ridge English Quality Rosé Sparkling Wine 2009

£17.99 Laithwaites

If you didn’t see the wine’s salmon colour then you’d think this was a well-balanced sparkling white. The long-lasting bubbles give this wine a creamy edge.

halfwine sherry tasting pack10 Sherry Tasting Pack (4 half bottles of sherry)

£30.25 for 4x37.5cl (order by Wednesday 18th to ensure a Christmas delivery)

As a present or just because you want to try and compare four different sherries, then this tasting pack is the one to buy. Because these are the four best sherries I’ve tasted ever. All taste fresh and nicely balanced, and all work equally well as an aperitif or matched to nuts and dried fruits. The oloroso sherry tastes of freshly hulled nuts, while the manzanilla tastes of light treacle with a match light apple freshness. Expect long-lasting flavours of lemon butter from the amontillado, and hazelnut astringency from the fino. A fine collection.
